Slow down your aging - Reduce AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products)

Hiya folks,

How old do you think this guy is? What if I tell you that he’s 27? No way you are saying.

Now how about this woman? How old is she? Is it possible that she’s 72 years old?

Yes you are right the man is clearly 72 years old and the woman is 27 years old. Aging is something that we recognize immediately. Aging is a progressive process that till today we are un-able to stop. Even the health Guros – you look at them through the botox and you know their age.

Humans don’t need testing for blood pressure in order to gauge quite accurately the age of a person. Actually till today – there’s no test that can provide us with the "biological" age of a person.  We just take a look and we know, it’s the hair color, it’s the wrinkles, it’s the spots on the skin, it’s the color that gets darker brownish, it’s the dowager’s hump that’s develops and sometimes it’s the clogged brain (dementia) that we witness.

But biological aging can be slowed, and actually scientists are starting to explore in the last years the possibilities. Can we slow the formation of wrinkles? Can we delay the onset of Cataracts?  Can we delay the onset of diabetes? Of heart disease?

The answer is that probably yes – and today we are going to explore one of the major age promoting agents – AGEs - Advanced Glycated End products, and we are going to learn how to slow their formation.

What are AGEs?

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are a group of compounds that are formed when sugar interacts with proteins. AGEs are useless debris that results in tissue decay as they accumulate. They provide no useful function, they can’t be burned for energy, and they provide no lubricating or communicating functions. AGEs are harmful compounds that are being accumulated by our body and are thought to be one factor in aging and some age- related chronic diseases.  The more we accumulate AGEs, the more we age.

The pathological effects of AGEs are related to their ability to promote oxidative stress and inflammation by binding with cell surface receptors or cross-linking with body proteins, altering their structure and function [1].

Accumulated AGEs are associated with the amount of wrinkles, the general health of the skin, the amount of plaque that fills the arteries leading to arteriosclerosis, the loss of brain cells leading to dementia. AGEs are highly associated with diabetes and other chronic diseases.

They tend to clutter together and sit there in the body as debris, they are resistant to the immune system and the body just can’t get rid of them.

What is the damage that AGEs cause?

AGEs are forming everywhere in the body,  they are the result of proteins being bonded (glycated) with glucose and since we have lots of tissue made of protein and since glucose is flooding our body then this catholic marriage between proteins and glucose occur randomly all the time. But luckily many tissues are being replaced by the body so the AGEs can’t accumulate on those tissues. However there are some tissues that are never replaced in the retina of the eye, in the brain and in some other strategic locations – there the damage is accumulated. If your retina gets AGEs then that's for life!!

So let's go over the damage that these AGEs are causing:

Cardio Vascular diseases

AGEs cause arterial stiffening – healthy arteries can expand and accommodate blood ejected from the heart. This way the arteries kind of smooth the blood stokes into the rest of the body. Arterial stiffness causes the heart to pump harder in order to make them expand – a huge toll on the heart. [2]

AGEs cause atherosclerosis endothelial dysfunction – The endothelium is a thin layer on the artery wall just at the interface between the blood stream and the rest of the artery tissue. When functioning properly it controls the volume of electrolytes and other substances that pass from the blood into the tissues. AGEs  form on this endothelium tissue and cause inflammation there. They also cause generation of reactive oxygen species that bind with low-density lipoproteins (LDL). While cholesterol may not be a problem for your body (yes, yes!) the oxidation of the "bad cholesterol" (small LDL particles) is forming a plaque and eventually blocking the vessels.

As I explained in my blog post about sex - NO (Nitric Oxide) expands the arteries thus counteracting some of the mechanisms for atherosclerosis. AGEs interfere with this activity promoting atherosclerosis and… yes – they are causing erectile dysfunction to.

Semba et al. studied a group of 559 women aged 65 and older for 4.5 years and found that the highest risk for dying of cardiovascular disease were for women with the highest CML – one of the more known AGE compounds. [3]

Muscle Weakness

Muscle weakness is a problem of one third of women and half of men older than 60 in the us. In a study on women over 65 it was found that women with higher concentration of CML had less grip strength than women with lower CML [4]

Kidney failure

AGEs are scarring the kidney's tiny blood vessels that filter urine from the blood (Glomerulosclerosis). It cloggs the blood vessles inside the kidney which eventually end in kidney failure [5].

Alzheimer’s disease

AGEs are throught to be involved in Alzheimer's disease by inducing oxidative stress, inflammation and cell death. Researchers were studying a collections of brain samples from deceased patients who had suffered from Alzheimer's vs. a control group and found evidence for oxidative stress in the hippocampus part of the brain of Alzheimer's patients[6].

Eyes diseases

The retina of the eyes is the tissue on which light falls after it goes through the lens. This retina is exposed to lifetime of potentially damaging environmental and physiological factors that make the component cells exquisitely sensitive to age-related processes.  It can cause age-related macular degeneration (AMD) which is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the western world [7]

It is suggested that advanced glycation plays also a pivotal role in cataract formation – the second leading cause of blindness. Since the lens proteins are long-lived, they too are highly susceptible to damange induced by AGEs. Researches took samples from 44 cataractous eye lenses and 6 non cataractours eye lenses, and found out that AGEs formed in higher degree in cataractous lenses than in noncataractous lenses. [8]

Skin

There is ample evidence that AGEs play an important role in skin aging for example collagen is a major protein in the skin. AGEs impair its function leading to stiffness and decreased flexibility [9]

AGEs and Diabetes

All the above effects of AGEs are illnesses of the elderly, the more we age, the more AGEs we accumulated. It's a progressive thing and the only thing we can do is to try to slow down this process and there are studies that correlate human age with the accumulation of AGEs (10).

Diabetes is this terrible disease that accelerates aging. In diabetes the average level of glucose in the blood is higher than normal people throughout the day which provides more opportunity for this infamous glycation process leading to the accumulation of AGEs. So researchers are studying diabetes because they have this opportunity to see all the above diseases in younger people. And indeed diabetic people suffer from the above, their condition lead eventually to coronary heart disease, to kidney failure, skin aging, cataract, Alzhimer's, etc.

So let's put here some wrinkles to remind you of where you are going to if you continue down the path of diabetis...

What is causing AGEs accumulation?

There are 3 sources in general:
·         Endogenous – AGEs are created internally by a process called glycation on which proteins are bound to carbs.
·         Exogenous –AGEs is input to the body through food that we ingest.
·         Smoking – AGEs are input to the body through the smoke that we inhale.

Endogenous AGEs

Endogenous AGEs are formed inside the body. As explained above they are the result of a process by which proteins are bound to glucose. When we eat , the level of glucose in the body goes up. The glucose is randomly bound to proteins to form AGEs. The higher the blood glucose – the higher the number of AGEs that are formed.

To combat the formation of these AGEs – we should keep the blood glucose level down. Every second that passes the number of AGEs created is linearily proportional to the glucose level at that second. This is why we care about average glucose levels rather than fasting glucose level.

If you eat foods with high glycemic values such as breads then your glucose level shoots up. If you eat the whole wheat ‘healthy’ breads then your blood glucose levels stays high for a long time since the glucose is released slowly to the blood over a long period of time.

If you eat 3 meals per day and you don’t eat nothing between meals then you can see that typically your blood level goes up at the time of the meal, reaches the maximum about one hour later and after two hours it’s back to normal.  This is the point where your psych leads you to the coffee corner to get your dose of coffee with sugar and if you are proud of not adding sugar then you add milk and this milk contains lots of glucose. And perhaps you taste a little cookie – you don’t really let your glucose level go down down to the required zone between 70 and 85, you always keep it above  100 and you are promoting AGE formation every second of your life… well except for when you are sleeping.

Yea - yumm, yumm, yummy eh? And I also watch closely at my work place after these people taking serials with the 3 clock's coffee...

Measuring Endonenous AGEs formation

There are many types of proteins binding to glucose. The most famous of them is called HB1AC. An HB1AC level below 5 is considered excellent, until 6.5 is regarded as normal, beyond 6.5 is already full blown diabetes. This HB1AC is linearily associated with your average blood glucose level in the past 60-120 days !!! The following table shows the linear relation.

I found the table in (11) and it says that actually there's a simple linear relation between your HB1AC and your average blood glucose level (eAG): eAGE(mg/dl) = 28.7*HbA1c - 46.7.
Now think about it – while the AGEs are the accumulated glycation over time, the HB1AC is the velocity… Remember what you learned in physics? S = v*t or AGEs goes like HB1AC * time. If you want to get older faster, then drive your life with a high HB1AC. I am currently measuring my glucose before and after every meal on top of fasting glucose that I measure in the morning. I want to find out which of my meals is increasing the velocity of my aging. Yes, people just don’t get it – they continue snacking between meals, they enjoy good tasty fiberless, processed food and they drive fast to their DEATH. I don’t, I try my best to live slowly. Yes, measuring my blood glucose costs me money (~0.5$ per test) but I am learning valuable information about my body as I am striving for  health excellence.

I am proposing here a hypothesis. Indeed it has to be proven yes I know but let me say it. If HB1AC is the velocity as explained above and we take HB1AC=4.5% as the optimal HB1AC and 120  years is the time we are expected to live if all goes well then the road ahead of us from the day we are born is 4.5%*120 years = 540 years%. As simple as that. Now you can look at the table below and see your life expectancy as a function of your HB1AC measure provided that Endogenous AGEs are the only life shortening effect. Yes Indeed you could be dying from cancer before you reach you AGEs induced life expectancy but if you don’t then you are expected *on average* to live as much as written in this table.

Exogenous AGEs

AGEs can be input to the body through the food we eat.  A 2010 study contains tables of foods and their AGEs.  You might want to take a look – it’s interesting. (12)

I averaged the amount of AGEs per serving according to different categories and the following table summarize that.

The highest amount of AGEs per serving can be found in meat products, that is poultry with 4,790 Kilo units per serving, Beef with 4,445 Kilo units per serving and Pork with 3,658 Kilo units per serving.  See the brown thing forming on the chicken? That's a high concentration of AGEs... And... no, if you remove the skin you will are going to meet lots of AGEs in meat.

Fish, cheese, fats and lamb follow with about 1000-1500 Kilo units per serving.

The least amount of AGEs can be found in fruits, eggs, breads, vegetables, milk, fruit juice and vegetable juice – up to 150 Kilo units of AGEs per serving.

But inside the groups there’s lots of variance because the amount of AGEs is a function of how you cook, at which temperature and for how long. If we take the poultry group for example and focus on a serving of chicken breast then broiling dry gets the highest amount of AGEs – 7922. The higher the heat, and the less liquids involved – the higher the AGEs intake. Actually any time you see sear marks on steak, a crispy coating on fried chicken, or a golden crust on bread, you’re looking at AGEs (13).

Deep frying is also a bad option, Grilling too.

Eating the chicken breast raw is the best option (692) followed by steaming, then poaching and boiling.
Sometimes once you fry your food it doesn’t really matter much if you do it for 7 minutes (3,726 KU/serving of chicken breast) or for 13 minutes (4,444 KU/serving of chicken breast). But cooking Paste for 12 minutes double the AGEs than cooking the same pasta for 8 minutes.

The temperature of cooking matters a lot. Cooking chicken breast for one hour yields 1011 KU/serving AGE while broiling it for 15 minutes yield 5,245 KU/serving.

The amount of processing also affects the AGE levels. For example popcorn has 40 KU/serving while perzels have 537 KU/serving !!! This is because of the different processing that these two products are undergoing.

A few studies about intestinal absorption of different AGEs have been conducted. However, the complete extent of absorption of each individual AGE is not well known. The most studied dietary AGEs are CML, pyrraline and pentosidine. Several studies have shown different rates of absorption of each of them. However, their metabolic pathways have not been elucidated. More studies on this area are needed to understand the impact of dietary AGEs on health and aging (14)

If indeed there is a significance absorption rate of exogenous AGEs then it negates the claims made by  those promoting diets based on intake of fat and proteins from meat (Paleo and such).

Practical Advice

So after introducing you to AGEs and going through all the pathologic consequences as well as the why and how's... let's give you a practical advice - how and what you should eat to reduce AGEs :)

  1. Most people start to care about their health when they are old and when the damage has already accumulated. Start Today, oh no no... start YESTERDAY!
  2. Get yourself familiar with the table of glycemic indexes – avoid those with high glycemic values.
  3. Notice that whole wheat bread has the same glycemic value as white bread – eat wheat very rarely or better yet - don't eat wheat at all.
  4. Don’t eat white rice, pasta, instant oat meal, fruit juices, raisings, bagels, white potatoes and junk processed foods,
  5.  Don’t add sugar or fructose to your foods.
  6. Reduce your intake of grains and starches - rice, pasta, etc.
  7. Go test your Hb1Ac– if it’s above 5 then you should do something about it.
  8. Measure your glucose level before eating and 1 hour after eating - study how you respond to different meals.
  9. Avoid meat & cheese because of their exogenous AGEs.
  10. If you insist on consuming meat then eat it raw or steamed or poached or boiled.
  11. Reduce your intake of Soy and Tofu products because of their exogenous AGEs content.
  12. Avoid fish except for raw salmon, or perhaps canned tuna (Exogenous AGEs again)
  13.  Make greens & beans the center piece of your diet.
  14. Never eat foods that were cooked for a long time. Prefer your food cooked Al-Dante.
  15. Always cook with moistures (e.g. water): steaming, braising and blanching
  16. Avoid deep frying, roasting, broiling and grilling.
  17. Reduce your intake of nuts/seed to about an once a day (Exogenous AGEs again)

My superior vegan nutrition blood tests results

Hi there,

Just before I started my diet in the beginning of July I took a blood test and now I took more or less the same test again.

I am really thrilled, positively surprised and almost shocked to see such significant improvement in most parameters. 3 Months of super nutrition reversed my diabetes and improved other life threatening parameters significantly.

It should also be a good opportunity for you guys to learn about the main parameters that one should pay attention to when reading the blood test results.

It's not enough to worry only about the parameters that are in red according to the definition of your medical insurance. Total cholesterol, for example, doesn't have to exceed 200 in order to catch your attention - it should be a concern for you the minute it goes beyond 140. So take the time to go over this with me and learn something useful that could extend your life.

Glucose

Starting with the glucose test that in simple words measures the concentration of glucose (sugar) in one's blood. The normal range is between 70 and 100. Between 100 and 126 is called pre-diabetic and beyond 126 is diabetic. In the beginning of July I was shocked to find out that my glucose level sky rocketed to 129!! I immediately started my diet, and with the help of Joel Fuhrman's book "The end of diabetes" I lowered my glucose level and it now measures 97. I am back to normal. Actually when I measure at home I am more like in the 88-95 range.

Am I satisfied? Well partially yes, but I think that this is still too high - I would like to be able to go to sub 80 at some point cause I believe that one lives faster when having such high glucose levels. I want to live slower, cause I want to lengthen my life. I will explain all about that in one of the coming posts.

Hemoglobin A1C

Once a patient gets a glucose level beyond 100 - the doctor typically asks for hemoglobin A1C test. This test shows how good was the glucose level during the last 3 months. You want your Hemoglobin A1C to go below 6. My doctor gambled that I shall have a reading of 6.0 two months ago and I even exceeded that! That's a very very good result. The end of the diabetes as we know it....

Cholesterol

As expected my cholesterol is absolutely optimal now. I was vegetarian since I was 7.5 years old, but I ate junk food so my cholesterol was very high but still not extremely high because at the end of the day I was not consuming meat. However it seems like the other stuff that I was eating including eggs and milk and cheese still managed to take me to 197.

But now - look at this - 117 !! If you remember I quoted the 97 yo vegan - a heart surgeon saying "If you can keep your Cholesterol under 140 - you chances of developing a coronary heart disease are very small"  and he then said that his cholesterol level is 119 atm. Well mine is 117 !! Hada boy!

Triglycerides

These are the fats that are so dangerous for the heart. You don't have to perform a blood test to get the reading... all you have to do is look at the tummy. I had a huge tummy and now it's gone.

GOT

Here too you can see that my diet has done wonders. Let me first explain what this test is. This test is checking the liver. As you know the liver detoxifies the blood in the circulation removing harmful substances, etc. Now there are several enzymes that are helping in this process. When the liver is damaged or destroyed these substances leak into the blood stream and can be measured. The problem with this GOT test is that it can indicate problems not only in liver muscle tissue but also in skeltal or coronary muscle tissues. To complement this test one should take the ALT test.
Anyway my doctor, contrary to the stupid doctors in "seker menahalim" immediately said that this too shall go away the minute I slim down! I like this doctor of mine. Not only is she smart and advanced, she's also even a little bit... humm... sexy.

Hemoglobin

The hemoglobin is an oxygen binding compound that carries oxygen into the cells and trust me your cells do need oxygen, otherwise you should feel fatique. I have always had low hemoglobin level but I was also always busy taking care of my job... I never had the time or the priority to look into this - IT'S ABOUT TIME! Especially since I thought that this nutritarian diet is going to improve things and as far as what I can see my hemoglobin got lower!!

Hematocrit

In conjunction with hemoglobin doctors always look at the Hamatocrit. These two folks typically go hand in hand. The Hematocrit is telling us what is the percentage of red blood cells in our blood. These red blood cells are carying the hemoglobin that carries the oxygen into the cells. My reading is low and it even went south in the last two months. You can look at it like this - the blood are the street of NYC and the red blood cells are the yellow taxi cabs and when their percentage is low then there's not enough taxis to carry hemoglobin so there's less hemoglobin too.

But why? Why do I have low Hemoglobin & low Hamatocrit? And also... - why me????

Iron

Big part of the Hemoglobin above is made of iron - and it's the one responsible for compounding with the oxygen and carrying it into the cells. So if there's no iron - then the hemoglobin is low.

And indeed !!! - my iron levels were always low but now, in the last 3 months they dropped significantly.

How on earth?

I mean I was eating tons of green leaves. But I read that plants based iron is not absorbed so good as the iron in the red meats. And stop with this "I told you" all you non-vegans reading this...

And I was also supplementing with 25 mili grams of iron pills - daily!

So how come this measurement is low?

I noticed over the years then whenever I am on a 'weight loss' diet my iron drops. But this time I thought it shall be different because I am supplementing and I am so healthy.

What is going on????

Ferritin

While serum iron is the level in the blood - the ferritin is the level of iron in the store house - in the liver. So it seems like I had huge improvement - I almost doubled the amount of iron in my storage.

But it's not in the blood... - why?

I don't know - but I suspect that the aspirin that I am taking on a daily basis is causing this. The aspirin is responsible for diluting the blood so yea it could hurt the hematocrit and it could also thus lower the hemoglobin...

So the hypothesis is as follows... - when I was fat and drinking 10 cups of coffee each day and eating lots of cheese my iron absorption was bad and thus the ferritin level went down. Then, when I started dieting 3 months ago - I ate lots of greens and supplemented with iron pills and indeed my ferritin went up however since my blood is diluted with Aspirion - it doesn't show... I will have to ask the doctor about this "theory".

MCV

MCV measures the size of the red blood cells Actually microcytic Anemia is defined in wikipedia as too low MCV. So as you can see things are improving but I am not there yet...

MCH

So if we are suspecting microcytic anemia then in this case the red blood cells should be hypochromic, that is - they should be pale. The MCH actually measures how pale they are. High MCH indicates macrocytic anemia and low MCH indicates microcytic anemia which means anemia that is cause by iron deficiency.

so to conclude the iron related blood tests here is what I think

  • Ferritin is the most important indication for amount of iron in storage - and it improved.
  • Hemoglobin & Iron as well as Hematocrit, MCV & MCH were probably affected by me taking Aspirion - so this is the end of Aspirin.
  • Low iron can be a result of 3 things: low input of iron, bleeding & low absoption rate which could be genetic related.
  • I shall do colonscopy just to rule out the bleeding option.
  • I shall read and educate myself about iron input using plants - is it true that iron absorption from plants is that low?
  • I shall not dive into genetics for now.
  • After reading and educating myself about these issues I shall make my decision - increase supplementation or stick to plants as my sole iron source.

Vitamin B12

Vegans can't get B12 from their diets. It's therefore that I get it from a B12 supplement. Before starting my new diet 3 months ago I measured the Vitamin B12 and it's ok, B12 deficiency are developed over a long period of time - years! so I think I shall monitor this annually to make sure that I have enough of this extremely important vitamin.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D was not measured 3 months ago - I just wonder why - I mean 1/3 of Israelis are Vitamin D deficient and I am sure those that are sitting in the office all day like myself are even more deficient. Anyway I started my daily "sun bathing" 3 months ago - and the results are showing that I am already out of the dangerous zone. I am almost sure that I would be at risk of deficiency or even deficient if measured 3 months ago. I can actually feel it in my bones - if I don't get the 10 minutes exposure to the sun on a daily basis then I can't concentrate, can't work effectively - for me it's a new habit.

Conclusions

The results are astonishing - I got rid of diabetes, I reduced the cholesterol significantly, along with triglycerides, and resolved the oily liver problem. The only thing that is still a mystery for me is my iron levels and I shall explore that.

Diabetic my ass

Hi there folks,

I was very satisfied with my visit to my doctor. To cut story short she said I will definitely erase this diabetic and she's expecting my 3 months blood tests (In September) to confirm that. She said it's not true that diabetes cannot be reversed and that those few clients who lost weight - got rid of their diabetes.

I still asked her to get this gluco meter cause I just love to experiment, take tests and explore stuff. Hey I did it for my aquarium...

Here's a picture of my war room from the days I was maintaining a planted aquarium -

So in the last 24 hours I had the pleasure of stabbing myself no less than 37 times!!..

And here are the results of the Israeli Jury as they say...

Friday I woke up after a good deep 8 hours of sleep and measured 85.
Today I woke up after again sleeping good 8 hours and measured 89.

This is < 100 - it's not diabetes guys.

If I lower a bit more - say to the 75-80 zone then I am in the range of calorie restriction.

It was interesting to follow how the sugar in the blood reacts to eating. so here's an example

The 0 point in this chart is when I just finished breakfast. As you can see right at that time the blood sugar was still not affected. It was 109 just like it was 75 minutes before. But then, 20 minutes later it shoots up to 151 as the oats and blueberries are being digested. 80 minutes after breakfast is over - my blood glucose level drops down to 102, but then 20 minutes later it all of a sudden remembers to digest something and it goes back to 115 and then down to 105 where it stays even after 6 hours... It doesn't go back to the 85 baseline for some reason. Go figure.

Let's see another example -

This time the lunch was probably big - I ate a big salad with beans a dragon fruit. So one hour after I finisehd my lunch the glucose level was at ~150 and wouldn't go down. 20 minutes later it undershoot to 95 and then stabilized at 105. It didn't return to the base line.

Friday night dinner with kids I ate kale with spinach as a starter and then Austrian cauliflower soup followed by a dragon fruit. I also drank a little wine. and here's the chart -

At the 80 minutes mark time - it was all over, nice... and when I woke up after 8 hours I had a fasting glucose level of 89.

As for today - I didn't need to take many blood tests. Lunch was 5 hours after breakfast and right before lunch the glucose level was 87 !! It means that yes I returned to the baseline. That's what "calorie restriction" recommended - don't eat before blood sugar goes back to your baseline... :)

Anyway - I am in good shape, I feel quite ok and I think I am on my way to optimal health,

Aviel.

I am diabetic

Dear friends,

A month ago I went to the annual medical checkup after 2.5 years on which I skipped and avoided the checkup. I was measured 137.8 Kg with a BMI of 42.1. I had to step down off the treadmill after 8.5 minutes during stage 3 out of 5. My blood pressure as measured at the doctor's office was 170/80.

Dr. Vardina Shumala was very nice to me, but at one point she put the glucose results on the table right there in front of my eyes - 129 !!  If your glucose reading is below 100 then you are OK. Up to 125 means pre diabetic but beyond that means you are diabetic.

I was shocked! Horrified! At the back of my mind I remembered that once you are diagnosed as diabetic - then that's for life, and that's for a short life. All those years I knew and I still know that if there's a need then I can become thin - I can put myself on a diet. All those years I knew that if ever I become pre diabetic then I will go back to non-diabetic, and here in front of my eyes I had this diagnosis:

           METABOLIC SYNDROME
           MORBID OBESITY - BMI 42.1
           DIABETES MELLITUS
           HYPERTENSION
           HYPERTRIGLYCERIDEMIA

After 2.5 years of neglection - the verdict was in front of my face - you are diabetic.

I looked at the doctor with tears in my eyes and asked if that can be reversed, if it's temporal and she said "oh of course it can", Wow I felt such a relief! She continued to tell me that two of her patients have gone through sleeve gastronomy, they lost so much weight and now they are out of diabetics.

When I was going to the family doctor the taxi driver told me "Listen, I was at your place years ago, I was fat, I had 'high sugar', and all of this is gone once I went through this surgery". I thanked him, I even tipped him for giving me this advice.

So Diabetic could go away - or couldn't it?...

Few days ago I got the result of the Hemoglobin A1C % - or as they call it HBA1C. That test confirmed that I am diabetic:

                                    Range   25/06/2013
HEMOGLOBIN AIC%    4.8-6    7.2(H)

I called the doctor today to try to comprehend this horrible result. I asked her what should be the test result one year from now such that she can say that I am not diabetic any more. She said I should be <100 and my HBA1C should be ~6.5 but that doesn't mean I am not diabetic - it only means that I can control it. I asked her if I demonstrate 5.5 - would that means that I won this disease and she said - no way! This disease is progressing and it's a horrible disease that affect the eyes, the kidneys, the legs and all I can do is try to make it progress more slowly. She said that once diagnose as diabetic there's no way back, it's just like a DNA thing - if you have blue eyes then you can't do nothing about it, you can wear brown contact lenses if you want but you can never change your genetics. It's beyond the numbers and the test results - she said - it's a disease and it's progressing.

Gone all of my dreams to live long and healthy life - this disease is going to progress no matter what I do. As per this doctor I shall be able to slow its progress using the right medications and later on by injecting insulin. She actually already prescribed a medicin for me  -

"Tab. Metforming 850 mg X2/day, every day and every night after breakfast and dinner."

Yes, the last 4 years weren't great for me, I was and still am going through a divorce battle in court which I can safely say now - shortened my life. Also at work I had to work many hours a day and for many years in order to meet unrealistic schedules, in order to prove myself time after time, I was under tremendous stress and almost lost my job. I put aside my health, I forgot about my weight, I was rushing to the cafeteria, picking something quick to eat and eat it while seated in front of the computer, not losing a minute - always in a rush. Thank god with my new managers - this looks like history now, the schedule is reasonable, my personal manager is a sweet man and his boss commanded me to take it easy which is encouraging. "It's an order" he told me - to take it easy, slow down and take care of my health first. One should be lucky to chose the right wife and the right manager I guess.

At least I am lucky that I have such great parents - you can't chose your parents!

About my Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Syndrome… - that’s what the doctor said last week – “google it” she said – It’s not good!

Hi,

My name is Aviel Livay, I am 50 years old, I am very fat and I want to do something about it.
Last week after 3 years of postponing and postponing I had my yearly checkup. It was the first time ever I got real scared.
My height is 181 cm and I weigh 137.8 Kg !!!!
Here’s how I look… - I know, I know – I look terrible

And side view… -

I was going happily like this for the last 3 years, skipped my annual checkups and always saying that once I start my diet – I can get rid of the weight very easily so no worries…

But last week I did my annual checkup at last… - The results were absolutely scary. When I was weighed first thing in the morning and it showed 137.8 – I smiled.

After that I reached my max heart beat of 153 (=(220-age)*90%=(220-50)*0.9) after 8.5 minutes of ergonometric test – that’s very bad but the doc said it’s ‘average’ so I was wondering how come I am still average with such poor results.

But the shock came when the doctor presented me with my blood test result and it showed 129 glucose level. For Goodness sake!!!! I was always at 95-96 and all of a sudden and without warning I got 129. Diabetes!! It’s not pre-diabetes – this is Diabetes and I read something about once you get into this situation – there’s no way out, the cells got so much sugar from my diet that they are just blocking sugar.

Here’s the deal and in very short – once we eat something containing sugar, the pancreas releases insulin that opens the cells of the body such that they can have sugar. Since the cells of my body got so much sugar – they are now not responding to insulin as they used to – they are resisting it and wouldn’t open so the sugar stays in circulation and it is impossible to get rid of it.

This is very bad news but for some reason the doctor told me that after I lose 10 Kgs – the high glucose level shall disappear. I had such an anxiety when she showed me this number and when she told me that it is reversiable I felt like wow she’s my savior.

You see? I am in this situation that I really am willing to do anything – just give me one more chance please God! One more chance and I shall be a good boy for the rest of my life. If only I knew that this was coming – I was thin already now.

On top of this my blood pressure is 150-80 and occasionally going to 160. This is very bad too. My veins are blocked. I ruined them and I did this on purpose – it was a game, I thought I could stop and reverse any minute.

OK look – I went through several diets, I already lost 30 Kgs and gained it back – I know that if I want to then I can get rid of the fat, but the problem is not losing the weight or even maintaining it for a year, the problem is staying thin for the rest of my life – that’s a HUGE challenge!!

OK so here I am planning for the diet and I already know that it’s gonna start in two days on Tuesday 2/July/2013 19:30 Israel time. I am going to visit the local weight watchers gathering and start from there. I have good experience with these people – they  are good, their method works for me, I shall start from there even though I know I am more profound, and more serious than the average customer there, will tell you about that another time.

So meanwhile - I am having here my last suppers… - with nice big chunk of sweet water melon…
-

Wish me luck... please,

Aviel.
